Rescue Me ID: 14-10-17-00651Luke (male)

Basenji    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

Luke is a 4 year old mahogany tri-color boy who was originally part of the confiscated Wimauma pack. Luke would prefer to be in a home with fewer canines than in his current foster home. He adores his humans and loves to cuddle with them. While he does sometimes enjoy playing with the other basenjis, he does need a tolerant canine companion. Luke has a lot of skin which gives him a lot of wrinkle, but it also makes his ears so heavy that other dogs might mistake his expressions for aggression. Luke may resource guard his humans a bit as he loves his humans so much and often wants them all to his self. It is unknown how he would be ... (Read More)with cats or kids, so a home without either is best. Luke weighs in at 31 lbs and can be handled all over, loves to cuddle, and despite his larger than normal basenji size, he somehow can manage to curl himself up so tightly, he will be like a 20 lb lap dog. If you think you could provide Luke with love, attention, cuddle time, and leadership, please complete the adoption application located at www.campbasenji.org. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-10-17-00358Jeeves (male)

Basenji Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Jeeves is an about 13 year old, red and white basenji/whippet mix who is around 22 - 22.5 pounds. Jeeves is incredibly well-mannered, being perhaps the best that has ever come into our rescue. Jeeves is completely compliant with everything that is expected of him and generally very quiet, but he will greet us upon our return with a very beautiful, round roo; a pleasant reminder that he does have a voice. Even though he is very mature and well-behaved, he still has a healthy prey drive as any self-respecting sighthound should. Despite his maturity, he should not be allowed outside in an unsecure area off-leash. Jeeves should always have a ... (Read More)lanky, lean appearance relative to a pure basenji, since he appears to be part whippet. Note that he is quite mature, so rebuilding muscle lost prior to rescue and treatment with pancreatic digestive enzymes (that must be continued daily for his life) will take time. Muscle building for Jeeves is accomplished by every other day or every third day of longer walks. Given that we have seen the diagnosis of this condition often missed by vets, including specialists, previously, it is highly probable that he had the condition for some time to get down to the emaciated 14.6 pounds that he was when he first arrived. When he strayed into someone's yard, he was wearing an expensive jacket - someone loved him, but we feel that his owners quickly gave up looking for him, probably thinking that there was no way he could have survived any time outside of their yard. He does have some scars that may not be obvious in the photos that are indicative of having been on the losing side of a dog attack, leading to crepitus in damaged joints. While he will jump around on his backend in pursuit of an opposum walking on the top of a fence, he should not be expected to jump up onto beds or furniture. He can do steps, but he has only a couple around here. If you have room in your heart for this gorgeous and super easy boy, please complete the adoption application located at www.campbasenji.org. Jeeves is located in the Tampa Bay area. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-10-17-00344Lussi (pronounced Lucy (female)

Basenji    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This obviously gorgeous, 22 pound, almost 9 year old, purebred, black and white girl has a gorgeous personality to go along with her looks. In her current foster home, she enjoys playing with younger dogs and even the mature female dogs. She LOVES to cuddle with her humans and can be picked up and handled all over very easily. Lussi is a poster child for good manners in a basenji and is one that can be easily taken out into the general public. Anybody who meets Lussi immediately falls in love with her. She has had experience with going to doggie day care without any issues. Lussi has been diagnosed with Fanconi syndrome; however, in ... (Read More)the right environment, her Fanconi appears to disappear leaving her with near perfect blood work and the ability to hold her urine for very long hours. Because she has been doing so well, her supplementation needs are very minimal. As Lussi has been asymptomatic, she will be DNA tested for Fanconi to confirm her diagnosis (and also to check if her Fanconi is genetic or induced). Lussi may be the easiest Fanconi diagnosed basenji ever. Lussi tolerates heat very well which is something that many Fanconi affected dogs cannot tolerate. Lussi has been tested with cats and she is good with cats. A home with occasional visiting children is fine; but a home with resident children may not be appropriate. If Lussi is not happy, she will demonstrate her unhappiness by peeing on the floor (very common in Fanconi affected basenjis). Lussi does not enjoy being confined. Lussi will also use 'tools' (such as a chair) to get to what she wants (like a quick snack on the counter). If you think you could provide lots of cuddle time, much love, and leadership to Lussi, please complete the adoption application located at www.campbasenji.org. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-10-17-00304Dana (female)

Basenji    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dana is a 22.5 pound, 8 1/2 year old red and white female basenji re-born. Formerly unsocialized with other dogs, Dana has learned the joy of basenji play and is regularly instigating play even with the youngest members of the pack. Dana has become almost too tolerant when playing with other basenji in her foster home as she now has to wear a cone to protect her neck while playing with young basenjis that are still learning to play politely. Dana is very well housebroken and respects her humans' space. While she enjoys being in the presence of her humans, she is independent enough to not be clingy. At night time, she still chooses to ... (Read More)sleep in her own bed. Dana walks well on lead and enjoys long walks. It is unknown how Dana would be with cats or children, but given that she was previously unsocialized which lead her to be previously snarky with other dogs, a home with no small children or cats is preferred. She need somebody who is willing to maintain her grain-free, fish based kibble as she does have a skin condition which appears to flare when she is fed kibble that is meat based other than fish. Currently Dana is blowing coat and her new coat is coming in much darker than any of her previous coats. Her body language can be a little confusing when first getting to know her as her facial expression always does not match her body language as she appears to have sustained damage from a previous dog attack years ago. While the scarring is slight, it does appear that she is showing the whites of her eyes at times as an indication of fear. She does enjoy watching the two horses in her current foster home through the fence, though it is unclear how she would act if there were no fence separating her from the horses. She would prefer a home with a yard with a shaded area as she will sun herself in excess. While she may initially seem very reserved and perhaps even a bit boring, this is very deceptive as she does have a lot of character. Dana will be tested for Fanconi syndrome prior to placement. If you think you could provide Dana with attention, cuddle time, and leadership, please complete the adoption application located at www.campbasenji.org. Dana is located in the Tampa Bay area. Rescue Me ID: 14-10-17-00177Mao (male)

Basenji    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Say hello to Mao! Mao was picked up as an intact, heartworm positive, under-weight, flea dermatitis-affected stray in central Florida. He is a friendly, very active 2-4 year old, 23 pound boy, who is easily distracted by the outside world, but easily re-directed. He does like to play like any self-respecting basenji. Mao will need a very secure home. While he is interested in getting attention from his humans, he thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the fence - or the squirrels are more plentiful... He seems to think that he can fit through a hole less than 2.5 inches high. It is unknown at this time how he will be with ... (Read More)children or cats, so a home without either is preferred. When Mao first arrived with us, he appeared to have had little training, but is a quick study and has picked up all regular commands. Mao's potty habits have been perfect. Mao has started heartworm treatment and will be be re-tested for heartworms soon. We are taking applications for Mao now, but he probably will not be placed in his forever home until he is clear of heartworm infection. Mao is currently in the Tampa Bay area. If you are interested in Mao, please complete the adoption application located at www.campbasenji.org. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-10-17-00163Roscoe (male)

Basenji Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

FL - Roscoe A white basenji?? Well, probably a basenji mix, this boy may be a Decker Rat Terrier ( http://deckerratterrier.nrta.com/index.shtml ), which used basenji to develop the breed. This very young boy, estimated to be a year and a half old at most, is very much still a puppy. While he has picked up on proper house habits quite quickly, he has a very difficult time holding still and will pace around with lots of circles along with the occasional tail-chasing. He is extremely playful, loves a lot of toys and attention, and will need a lot of supervision to make sure that he matures into a wonderful, mature adult. Thankfully, he is ... (Read More)generally quite quiet and responds immediately to 'no bark' even when playing. He will alert you if there is something strange or new to him. He can be handled all over. He is a bit of an extremist - he will want to jump up to lick your face with enthusiasm (making him inappropriate for a home with small children), but will also cringe at a verbal correction or even at a stern look. He does want to please, but is still a bit clueless as a pup. His new owner will need to provide plenty of exercise and guidance to help Roscoe to show his love of humans and life with a calm enthusiasm. A calm and tolerant mature canine companion may be helpful. It is unknown how he would be with cats, but given his play drive, a home with cats is not appropriate. Roscoe will be DNA tested for Fanconi Syndrome. If you think you could provide Roscoe with a calm, loving home, please complete the adoption application located at www.campbasenji.org. (Less)
