Rescue Me ID: 16-01-12-00307Mika (female)

Basenji Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

If you enjoy an active pet relationship and want a dog to run with, play with, or get involved in canine sports, Mika might be the dog for you. She is an energetic, playful, and intelligent 2 year old Boxer/Basenji mix looking for an owner who can provide lots of activity and exercise on a regular basis. She is affectionate and well-trained, but due to her high energy level, she needs more daily exercise and playtime than I am able to provide. I have had her since I rescued her as a stray at 5 months old, and although I love her, my schedule does not allow me to provide her with enough activity and attention, and she has to spend far too ... (Read More)much time in her crate. I am hoping to find her a new forever home with someone who can better meet her needs and provide her plenty of exercise and attention. Mika LOVES playing, both with people and other dogs, with fetch and frisbee catch being some of her favorites. She is intelligent and well-trained (including being housebroken and crate trained), and she has been through multiple levels of obedience training as well as pre-agility training. I'm sure she would excel in agility, flyball, and other canine sports with an owner that has the interest and can dedicate the time for training and practice. I also think she could do well as a hunting dog if given the necessary training, though this is not something I have ever pursued with her. She knows a wide variety of commands (sit, down, wait, come, leave it, pick it up, drop it, on your bed, etc.), though she does need some additional work on walking on a leash without pulling. Mika is fine with other dogs and with cats, and currently lives in a two dog, two cat household. She is also fine with kids, although because she is very energetic, she would be best in a home with children that are at least 4 or 5 years old. She is not aggressive at all, but when she gets excited she can be rambunctious enough to accidentally knock over a very small child. As a partial Basenji mix, Mika barks minimally and largely takes care of her own grooming. She doesn't require much maintenance beyond regular toenail trims. She weighs just under 50 lbs and is spayed, current on her vaccinations, and microchipped. If you are someone who enjoys an energetic dog and has the ability to spend time on a regular basis with her (running, playing, training, etc.) or would love to have a dog that can catch a frisbee or excel in dog sports, she is a great fit. I simply am not able to provide her with enough activity on a regular basis and want her to be in a home where she can get what she needs and be a blessing to a person or family who has the time available for her. Please contact me if you'd like more information or would like to meet with her. (Less)

Basenji Dogs can make good pets in Oklahoma if they match your IifestyIe. The Basenji is a playful, charming, energetic breed. They make excellent family pets but do best with older children. Basenjis can live in an apartment but need lots of daily exercise and long walks. A Basenji likes to chew and should be given toys and attention or it will get into trouble. Basenjis do not do well with cats and other pets beside dogs.
